It is hard to believe that BMW has been building motorcycles for 94 years. In 1923, the company released the R-32 with its opposite cylinders. Because of the extra cooling afforded by this configuration. BMW has continued with this design. Soon after the release of the R-32, it introduced the R-37 with the overhead valve heads, which doubled the horsepower. BMW continually used racing to improve the breed up to the outbreak of World War II.
After the war, BMW continued manufacturing OHV twins with R51 series. In 1952, BMW introduced its first sport model, the 600CC R-68. The 500CC motor was the backbone of its product line, and all BMW racers were 500s. It was a perfectly square motor: the bore and stroke were the same, which has long been considered the ideal combination.
In 1955 BMW radically changed its frames. It dropped the plunger frame and telescopic forks in favor of a swinger and an Eagle fork. The Eagles fork is a sort leading-link unit which had been used extensively in BMW’s race program. The R-68 now became the R69. The unit could achieve 35HP with its 8.0:1 compression ratio. It was continued until 1961 when the became known as the R69S. With its higher-compression pistons, less restrictive exhaust, a harmonic balancer and unique rear main bearing it could develop 42 HP. In addition to their unique valve covers, they now had a rear emblem “R69S” to help differentiate it from R-50 and R-60.

A very rare, optional VDO tachometer helps the rider monitor engine speed, and a large, optional BMW touring tank ensures extra miles on the road. Judged and earning 99 points at an AMCA meet, this particular motorcycle features its original, as well as full fairing and additional fuel tank. The Hella handlebar indicators blend gracefully with lines of the bike, and the alloy rims help punctuate the sporty manner of the S model.
