2017 Bonneville Speed Week

Founded in 1914, the Bonneville Land Speed Racing Speed Week is a 6 day event held each August on the Bonneville Salt Flats, 88 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah. This world renowned land speed racing event draws participants from around the world who share a common love for speed and beautiful, powerful motorcycles. Taking place on the dried bed of Lake Bonneville, the salt flats left behind during the summer months offer a unique racing surface that reduces the friction of traditional raceways. This makes it the perfect platform for setting new records and pushing motorcycle performance to the max. Focused around testing the speed and power of bikes both new and old, Bonneville Speed Week is six days filled with high adrenaline racing to get your blood pumping and your heart racing.

At this year’s Speed Week, August 13th to the 19th, Florida Motors Inc. represented two motorcycle teams with two vintage motorcycles created to hit world land speed records.

The first motorcycle, Bonny-2 (second generation), powered by vintage Ural-72 (clone of BMW) in class APS-VF500 hit the record with final speed 121 mph. It’s may not seem impressive until you realize we are talking about 70 year old engine. Michael Antonov showed how real champions make history! We’re so proud to be a part of this movement!

The second motorcycle was the IZH-47 in vintage class 350APS-VG. Despite being first time participants at Bonneville, Team ICM achieved their world record within the first two runs. By the rules of current class and SCTA-Bni, your speed will be counted after the second mile mark. After, if you broke the record, your motorcycle goes to the compound, and early the next morning you need to confirm your speed under the best possible racing conditions: when air is cold and the salt is hardened. So the final record is the total speed of both runs divided by two. Team ICM performed like a German machine, showing 100 mph in both runs. Our highly skilled, hardworking team produced awesome results we could only dream of. We are so proud of both teams for their accomplishments!

Florida Motors Inc will always support friendly competition. Our next big project is to build a Streamliner with a blown fuel engine (top fuel) to hit speed 500 mph. Stay tuned and see you next year on the GREATEST place on earth!
